Erhard Eppler dies at 92

Erhard Eppler has passed away on Saturday at the age of 92. We keep his relatives and friends in our thoughts at this difficult time and wish them the strength to be able to fill the gap he leaves in their everyday lives with beautiful memories.

Erhard Eppler was a role model. He gained his insights, among other things, when he served as Federal Minister for Development in the cabinet of the social democratic Chancellor, Willy Brandt, where he witnessed many facets of life around the world. He was the first member of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) to raise the issue of environmental protection within the party. He also contributed to the establishment of the term ‘quality of life’. In his personal life, he found strength in his faith and maintained his connection to nature through regular work in his own garden.

My connection with Erhard Eppler remained close over the past several years. It was personally enriching for me to talk to him about my doctoral thesis on the source of civic engagement or to exchange thoughts with him at the German Protestant Church Congress, the Kirchentag. I have learned from him how to sincerely pursue goals without losing sight of them in the day-to-day of compromise politics.
